We meet at the Birches just over Halfpenny Bridge in Ambergate. From there we make our way via Shining Cliff Woods to Alderwasley. We explore a stretch of the central Derwent Valley between Ambergate and Whatstandwell. This stretch is famous as canal, road, railway and river are very close together for approximately 2 1/2 miles. Good views of the eastern side of the valley should be had, including that of Crich Stand.
